SSU gifts $220, 000 to scholarships, bursaries and awards for students
As your Sheridan Student Union, we are happy to announce that we have recommitted $220, 000 towards SSU scholarships, bursaries, and awards! What began as a response to the student experience during the pandemic has now become an ongoing source of financial support for both domestic and international students at Sheridan. Collectively, our scholarships, bursaries and awards aim to ease financial pressures and address social inequities faced by students.
Last year, we were able to support nearly 300 students with a variety of SSU financial support, two of which became our first SSU Scholarship recipients. One of those students was Nashad Hakim, a 3rd-year InfoSec student who decided to leave his full-time job to pursue an education at Sheridan. As a mature student, Nashad faced dilemmas many students experience like trying to manage academic excellence, extracurricular opportunities and his overall well-being. The difficulties of finding flexible part-time jobs that could accommodate his class schedule, the need to study for midterms and exams and the desire to still have a social life led Nashad to submit an application for the SSU scholarships.
Another student, Amir Sadeghi also applied for the SSU Scholarship heading into his final year at Sheridan. With a clear passion for social work and aspirations for pursuing a master’s degree following graduation, Amir hoped for financial support that would give him the space to dream big and help bring his dreams to life. For students like Nashad and Amir, who have excelled in their studies at Sheridan despite having financial struggles, we applaud your hard work and resilience. You are the reason we created the SSU Scholarship in the first place. We encourage all eligible students to apply for the SSU Scholarship by September 30.
As the new semester begins, we know that many students will face financial pressures that impact how they show up at school and in the world. Our commitment to enhancing student well-being. supporting diverse student experiences and prioritizing students’ access to quality education is reaffirmed through initiatives like this. We want to give back to students in all that we do. SSU scholarships, bursaries and awards provide students with access to a variety of financial support as they continue to make an investment in their future. This initiative also empowered SSU’s Board of Directors to vote for and support funding more opportunities that will benefit current and future students. And finally, this commitment gives us, as your Student Union, the chance to build upon and reaffirm our mission to empower our student community to succeed in a changing world.
From supporting academic awards since 2003 to developing new ways to support diverse groups of students today, we are proud of the impact we have made and look forward to seeing the impact this $220,000 gift will have on the lives and well-being of students.
