In celebration & support of our 2SLGBTQ+ community here at Sheridan and all over the world!
This year Pride is an important opportunity to reflect on how each of us can help foster a sense of belonging, respect, and equity for all members of our community – to educate ourselves, and to amplify marginalized voices.
As is tradition, we acknowledge the launch of Pride Month by raising the Pride flag on our campuses. Some of you may notice that the Pride flag looked a little different. For the first time last year, we raised the Progress Pride flag to reflect the diversity and intersectionality of the 2SLGBTQIA+ community here at Sheridan and worldwide.

Request Your Building Positive Spaces Kits
Sheridan Student Union is excited to announce that faculty and staff can request Building Positive Spaces (BPS) Kits for their offices again this year!
The initiative, which was created by an SSU Vice President in 2021 as a long-term commitment to inclusivity, support and solidarity with the 2LGBTQIA+ community, has over the years become a colourful statement and proud addition to both Sheridan and SSU spaces.
Community Pride 2023 : Messages and Actions of Support
OPSEU Local 244 and Local 245 have each kindly made a financial donation of $200 each to the Sheridan Student Union (SSU), student operated 2SLGBTQ+ clubs. These funds will be directed towards supporting students as they connect to create friendships, and build peer support, in an inclusive and safe space here at Sheridan.
“Faculty Union Local 244 stands Proudly in solidarity with all our Pride siblings, this special month and throughout the year.”
“Local 245 is delighted to support student LGBTQ2S+ clubs of Sheridan College. As a Support Staff Union, we advocate for all our students in hopes to further promote inclusivity and acceptance for all.“
The Sheridan Student Union (SSU) and Sheridan Building Positive Space Committee would like to sincerely thank OPSEU Local 244 and Local 245 for this generous donation to the SSU 2SLGBTQ+ clubs.

Learn about FHASS’ new LGBTQ+ studies course
Sheridan's Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences (FHASS) launched a new breadth elective in LBGTQ+ studies, the first of its kind in Ontario. Professor Peter Grevstad, who planned and developed the course, says it has been a smashing success.
"It’s necessary that everyone sees themselves in the curriculum," says Grevstad. "This course is one way to include people. And it’s not just queer people I’m teaching: there are allies, there are people from many religions and ethnicities – it’s a diverse group of people who come together to learn.
Listen to the SuperQueero Podcast Project
Students enrolled in the new LGBTQ+ students course at Sheridan have a podcast assignment at the end of the term where they research queer heroes- local heroes, critical theory and historical heroes. Tune into the podcasts can hear what students have learned about the impact and work of RuPaul, Lil NasX, Alan Turing, Freddie Mercury, Elliot Page and more.
Sheridan, in partnership with the City of Mississauga, unveiled a rainbow Pride Bench in Scholar's Green outside of Sheridan's Hazel McCallion Campus!
A rainbow bench is a symbol. It means – welcome, friendship, community. It’s a symbol of what we are collectively trying achieve. A place to come together. A place to rest. A place to discuss ideas. A place from which to go forward and continue to advocate for inclusivity.
“We all share responsibility for cultivating an equitable and inclusive community, and we look forward to Pride Month each and every year,” says Dr. Janet Morrison, Sheridan’s President and Vice Chancellor.

More Than Pronouns
For many transgender, nonbinary, and gender-diverse people, pronouns are not simply words, they are an affirmation that people see them exactly as they are.
If you missed the Inclusive Communities session delivered by Sheridan Social Service Worker graduate Corrin Marier, here are a few resources for you to understand the impact of pronouns and inclusive language surrounding gender and sexuality:
The discussion was a community conversation with students and employee members of the Sheridan Building Positive Space Committee and facilitated by Dr. Cherie Werhun.
