In support of Pride this year, we have taken our celebrations online!

Your Sheridan Pride Club has put together a list of artists to highlight and celebrate the 2SLGBTQ+ community.

Brandi Carlile

Brandi Carlile is a multiple Grammy award winning singer-songwriter and producer whose music spans multiple genres, including folk rock, alternative country and pop. Carlile came out as a lesbian in 2002, and has taken part in activism and humanitarian work. Her organization, the Looking Out Foundation provides financial support to other causes, and Carlile actually teamed up with Sam Smith to record "Party of One" as a duet, with the proceeds going to charity.

Sam Smith

Sam Smith is an English singer and songwriter, known for the songs “Stay With Me” and “I Know I’m Not The Only One”, just to name a few. After coming out publicly as gay, Smith stated that the album, The Thrill of It All, showed "the gay guy I've become”. In 2019, Smith announced a decision to come out as non-binary and change their gender pronouns to they/them, stating, "after a lifetime of being at war with my gender I've decided to embrace myself for who I am, inside and out…"

Dorian Electra

Dorian Electra is an American singer, songwriter, video and performance artist, who drew national attention in 2010 with the music video "I'm in Love with Friedrich Hayek”. Electra created a music video series with Refinery29 about intersectional feminism and queer histories. These videos focused on the histories of intersectional feminist and queer issues, in collaboration with a variety of artists

King Princess

Mikaela Mullaney Straus, known by the stage name King Princess, is an American singer, songwriter, instrumentalist and producer from Brooklyn, New York. King Princess is genderqueer and gay, rose to fame in 2018 with the singles "1950" and “Talia”.

Elton John

Elton John is is an English singer, songwriter, pianist, and composer. He has more that fifty Top 40 hits on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 chart. John, who announced he was bisexual in 1976 and has been openly gay since 1988, has been involved in the fight against AIDS since the late 1980s. In 1992, he established the Elton John AIDS Foundation, which has raised over £300 million since its start.

Hayley Kiyoko

Hayley Kiyoko is an American singer, songwriter, and actress. Kiyoko identifies as a lesbian and she is dubbed "Lesbian Jesus" by her fans. Since publicly coming out, Kiyoko has been an advocate for LGBT rights, and her music videos highlight her own experiences and various LGBT-related issues.

Queen

Queen are a British rock band formed in London in 1970. Their classic line-up was Freddie Mercury (lead vocals, piano), Brian May (guitar, vocals), Roger Taylor (drums, vocals) and John Deacon (bass). Some of their most popular songs include “We Will Rock You”, “I Want To Break Free”, and of course “Bohemian Rhapsody.”

Joshua Sade James

Joshua Sade James is a Sheridan grad, who describes himself as a “gay Macklemore who can sing.” Being an advocate for mental health and a proud member of the LGBTQIA+ community, JSJ allows his own experiences and stories to be told through his music. You can find his singles “One Thing”, “All Fall Down” and “Feel Alright” on Spotify, Apple Music and iTunes.

Village People

Village People are an American disco group known for their on-stage costumes, catchy tunes, and suggestive lyrics. The group's name refers to New York City's Greenwich Village, at the time known for its large LGBTQ+ population. The characters were a symbolic group of American masculinity and macho gay-fantasy personas. The group quickly became popular and moved into the mainstream, with hits like “Macho Man and “Y.M.C.A.”

Lady Gaga

Lady Gaga actively supports LGBTQ+ rights worldwide, and actually attributes much of her early success as a mainstream artist to her gay fans and is considered a gay icon.

While it’s hard to imagine her songs not getting airplay, she’s stated that early on in her career, the turning point for her was the gay community.
