We’ve teamed up with Sheridan’s Wellness & Counselling team to talk about student wellness. There are many forms of wellness and we all take care of ourselves differently. When we think 'health,' typically the first few things that come to mind are eating right and being active.
But did you know there are actually eight dimensions of wellness?
Now more than ever, it’s important to put your health and wellbeing first. Learn how the different dimensions of wellness are interconnected and have a role to play when it comes to our overall health.
By learning about and engaging in small activities that support each dimension, our goal is to help the Sheridan community improve their overall wellness in a holistic way.
To help you start this journey, our former President, Jessica Marshall, wanted to share what she is doing to support her wellness during this time!
This year I decided to try my hand at gardening vegetables for the first time ever!
There is something so rewarding about planting and watching things grow that brings me a feeling of comfort, zen and accomplishment.
Something about lush green leaves is so calming for me, and hopefully at the end of the summer I’ll have a tasty snack too!

It is hard to feel financially well as a student. We have so many things to pay for.
But Financial wellness is more than just having money in the bank.
It is awareness of your spending, knowing how to form a budget and when and where to save your money.

These days I’ve been spending a lot of time on Discord just popping into voice chats on different servers.
It is nice to be able to spend time hearing other’s voices, and since so many of us are now behind screens, it’s an easy way to connect with people with the same interests or participate in clubs.

Some people love working from home, but for me it just brings work stress into the home and home stress into the workplace.
So I think it’s important to create a workspace that is distinct from the rest of your living space so you can be focused and productive, but also have the ability to disconnect at the end of the day.
Why not take your workday outside, and enjoy some nice weather at the same time?

I’ll admit. Being home over the last few months has made me really give in to my lazy side.
I definitely dropped the ball on my physical wellness, but with this little guy around I have a daily reminder to get out and go for a walk.
Now that the nice weather is here, it also serves as a mental health break when we get to take a walk in the sunshine, or spend the afternoon playing.

I LOVE to read. For information and learning, as well as fun!
My most recent book is Way of Kings by Brandon Sanderson and it is AMAZING!
I think reading helps keep my mind sharp, helps me learn new words and also allows me to find escapism and relaxation, which I think is also very important.

Being emotionally well is your ability to manage your emotions through stress and change, rather than being happy always or never feeling sad.
It is good to feel all emotions!
My way is to take a break from my stressors and step away so that I can more easily tune into my feelings and understand why I feel the way I do. Then I can respond to something that upsets me more constructively. It all comes back to mindfulness and just like physical skills it is a thing you have to practice every day to become good at it.

Spiritual Wellness is a deeply personal thing I think, and so it is different for everyone. You might find your zen in movement, in prayer, or in quiet reflection throughout the day.
You might find it when cuddling a loved one, looking into the eyes of a child or at the bottom of your coffee cup.
I think there is nothing more zen-like than a purring cat to remind me to take a break and seek out a little grounding.
