November 2024 Sheridan Student Union Recap

We’re back with another monthly update, highlighting all the exciting events and achievements that took place on our campuses throughout November! From hosting a free pop-up breakfast for students across all three campuses, to lighting up the night at our Diwali event and focusing on how we can better advocate for students,  here’s a recap of how we worked to enhance the #SheridanLife experience this month:  

 

 

Updates from Our Board of Directors

The Board of Directors are pleased to officially announce the appointment of Peter Kyadondo and Glaron Pinto as the new directors at Trafalgar Campus. Peter Kyadondo is a first-year experiential design student and brings leadership experience from his time at the Algonquin College Student Union and his background in employer branding. While Glaron Pinto is a third-year cybersecurity student and has been an active member of the Sheridan community, serving as a Student Ambassador, Peer Mentor, and VP of Operations at Enactus.  

Both new directors are excited to support initiatives that enhance the student experience!  Explore the Board of Directors’ office hours to learn more about the services and resources available to you! These office hours will be offered through Friday, December 13. 

 

 

Updates from Our President & Executive Team

After recently joining Ontario Student Voices (OSV) as a new Board Member, our President, Ganyo Soh, had the opportunity this month to advocate alongside Amalia, VP of Advocacy and Community Development, both provincially and federally during OSV’s Advocacy Week. As delegates Ganyo and Amalia’s goal was to amplify student voices by lobbying with stakeholders and government officials throughout Advocacy Week, along with creating conversations about student priorities in post-secondary institutions.  

Vincent, your VP of Equity, Diversity & Inclusion, took an important step this month in his personal and professional journey by delivering his first land acknowledgment.

At the AI Awareness seminar, Grace spoke about her perspective on AI awareness as a student and as VP of Academic Integrity and Student Success.

While Grace, your VP of Academic Integrity & Student Success, took part in the Joint Health and Safety Committee (JHSC) Inspection at the HMC Campus, along with JHSC Committee member, Mitchell McCarroll. Grace was also invited as a speaker at the AI Awareness Seminar hosted by the Sheridan Project Management Capstone team, in collaboration with Brilliant Minds Group (BMG). Grace also participated in the Trafalgar Fall Open House through delivering the land acknowledgement.  



Fahad presents the trophies to the winners of the Super Smash Ultimate Tournament and Game Day competition!

Fahad, your VP of International Affairs, successfully hosted over 100 Sheridan students at the Super Smash Ultimate Tournament & Game Day at HMC Campus, in collaboration with the Events Team and Dave Miller from We Got Game!  




This month, every member of the Executive Team actively engaged with students across all three campuses, while also planning impactful initiatives and contributing to our local communities:  

The Executive Team is excited to announce that the SSU Volunteer Program, launching next year, has already received over 80 applications! This new initiative offers students the opportunity to gain valuable volunteer experience while becoming a part of the SSU community. 

 

 

Sheridan Student Union Services

Our Services Team successfully hosted four flu shot and COVID-19 vaccine clinics across both the HMC and Davis campuses, helping students stay healthy this season. 

This November, the SSU teamed up with Rexall and Student Care to bring convenient Vaccine Clinics to Sheridan students!

Services is happy to announce that they have received 81lbs of new clothing to be added to the Dressed For Success Program! Drop off winter and/or business casual clothing in one of the SSU Clothing Donation bins located around all three campuses to help Sheridan students thrive. 

 

 

Sheridan Student Union Events

This month, our Events Team hosted several events, setting the stage for unforgettable nights of community, culture, and friendly competition. 

Diwali at the HMC campus was once again a huge success! Students celebrated the night away under the dazzling lights, all while dressed to impress in their finest attire. 

Over 130 students attended our Casino Night across both the HMC and Davis campuses, where they had the chance to try their luck at casino games—without the risk of losing real money. Students got competitive with classic games like Blackjack and Poker, all while competing for delicious prizes from SSU vendors, including The Den (Davis) and The Station (HMC).

 

 

Sheridan Student Union Clubs

Throughout November the Clubs Team focused primarily on planning for upcoming club events! Our Club Coordinator’s worked on planning for their upcoming end of semester celebrations as well as planning for events and initiatives next semester. The Clubs Team also hosted a pop-up!  

Large club events that occurred this month include:

  1. Google Developer Group: GDSC Sheridan College X GDG Mississauga Present: DevFest 2024

  2. Chinese Students and Scholars Association: CSSA 10th Anniversary Celebration 

  3. Sikh Student Association: Chaar Sahibzaade, The Legacy Lives On 

During this month, our clubs hosted a whopping 66 events and we warmly welcomed eight new clubs to our community: 

  1. Sheridan Filipino Student Association (TRC): This club’s goal is to get Sheridan students together to showcase Filipino Culture through history, food, music, storytelling, and of course having fun! 

  2. Beat Breakerz (Davis): This club will be a fun social club where everyone can come together and dance.

  3. Harmony Youth Club (Davis): The Harmony Youth Club will offer workshops designed to foster both personal and professional development for all participants. These workshops will also provide a valuable platform for gaining insights into Canadian culture and supporting participants as they navigate their journey in Canada.

  4. J-Fashion Club (TRC): J-Fasion Club is a social club that aims to unite all people new and experienced in Japanese fashion. Dress up for the club’s meetings and learn from your peers today!

  5. Sheridan Cosplay Club (TRC): Welcome to the Sheridan Cosplay Club! If you’re an experienced cosplayer, or you just want to get started, you’re welcome here!

  6. Indian Festivals Club (HMC): The Indian Festivals Club is a vibrant community dedicated to celebrating the rich and diverse festivals of India. Open to anyone interested in exploring the country's cultural heritage, the club organizes events that showcase traditional celebrations from various regions.

  7. Dreamy Jewelry (HMC): Dreamy Jewelry is a platform for Sheridan College students to connect, create, and express through the art of jewelry design. This club is dedicated to fostering originality, encouraging members to develop unique accessories that reflect their personal style and stories.

  8. Sheridan Manga Club (TRC): If you're into anime, manga, art, or fandoms, stop by this club’s weekly meetups and join their inclusive community of like-minded people! Their goal is to create their very own club manga!  

 

 

Sheridan Student Union Food Services

This month, our Food Services team helped make Sheridan College’s Fall Open House a tasty success, showcasing the delicious dining options available to students once they join the Sheridan community!

To spread holiday cheer across Sheridan campuses, SSU Hungry is hosting their first ever holiday BINGO! Students have until Thursday, December 12 at 3 p.m. to participate.

Feeling hungry on campus? Swing by our Food Services on campus and grab something delicious before our holiday closure starting Monday, December 16!

 

 

Employee Shout-outs! 

🗣️ Our President, Ganyo, emphasizes the great work of our VP Amalia, at the Ontario Student Voices (OSV) conference! Amalia had the opportunity to address Canada’s Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, Marc Miller, with the first question during the CASA Town Hall meeting that discussed the impacts of the international student cap affecting post-secondary school across Canada.  

🗣️ Our Events Team welcomed new members this month, and we're excited to have them on board! A special thank you to our Student Life Leads for their support in making this transition smooth and helping our new team members get acquainted with our community! 

🗣️ The Clubs Team highlights Miranda for her hard work on a new project incorporating club executives in more content! Well done, Miranda!
