Sheridan Student Union and Sheridan College will be recognizing the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women on this year with a variety of activities on all three campuses from December 4 - December 6.
To start the conversation, we are inviting the Sheridan community to participate in a Day of Awareness on December 4 and a Day of Action on December 5.
This day honours the lives of 14 young women who were murdered at Polytechnique Montréal on December 6, 1989. This act of violent misogyny shook our country and led Parliament to designate December 6 as The National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women.
Awareness, Action and Ceremonies at Sheridan
-
Creative Commons, HMC Campus from 11 a.m. - 1 p.m.
The Day of Awareness will highlight resources and supports available to the Sheridan community via a marketplace which will be held at HMC. Multiple internal and external partners will be available at the marketplace who will provide information about their services and supports. -
The Day of Action aims to encourage students to address and challenge gender-based violence, through participating in a pledge, and engaging in conversations with peer mentors through hallway connections at each campus.
You're invited to participate in a workshop facilitated by White Ribbon on a Draw-The-Line (DTL) initiative to engage the Sheridan community in a dialogue about gender-based violence. This workshop will help you enhance your understanding of the root causes of gender-based violence, challenge common myths about sexual violence, and develop the necessary skills and capacity to engage in prevention efforts. DTL also equips bystanders with information on how to intervene safely and effectively. It is our hope that 'Draw the Line' will educate students on how to spot sexual violence and empower them to make a difference in the Sheridan Community.
-
Davis Campus, B-Wing (bottom of the amphitheatre stairs) from 2:30 p.m. - 3 p.m.
The Day of Remembrance will honour victims and survivors of gender-based violence. You're invited to participate and show solidarity. We hope you can join us and share in this important conversation with the Sheridan community.
*After formal remarks, attendees are invited to step outside to the Peace Garden for laying of roses. Please dress for the weather.
Virtual: This event will also be streamed live via Sheridan TV on screens in common areas throughout our campuses. If you require accommodation, please email specialevents@sheridancollege.ca
