Hi Sheridan! My name is Rhema, and I am a member of the Board from the Davis Campus. I am currently heading into my third year of the Honours Bachelors of Community Safety Program and I want to share 'Why I decided to run for the Board?'. Who knows, maybe I can help you find your own reasons for running too.
LET'S DIVE INTO IT, SHALL WE!! Activism, fame, professional and personal development are some reasons people run in elections. I would be lying if I said those were not my motives either. One of the main things that attracted me to this role was the job description. It said something along the lines of "Do you have a drive to make a positive change for students on campus?" Helping the community is a big part of my program, and I thought what better way to start than with my college community. I have a passion for Sheridan students and love interacting with other students and meeting new people. Helping my peers and connecting them to the right resources are some things I genuinely enjoy doing. I’ve seen the impact this connection has on my life before I nominated myself, so this opportunity seemed perfect for me to positively impact the Sheridan community.
Another thing that stood out to me was that I would get to work with other student leaders from a wide variety of programs. I can say that this has been very true thus far. I have met some fantastic peers over the last few months who are just as passionate about the Sheridan community as I am. As mentioned above, one responsibility of the Director is to interact with students and use those helpful insights to make Sheridan better. Interacting with peers will help you better understand the student body and ultimately make you better at your job. It also keeps you away from your personal bias because you get to know what the vast majority of the student body needs.
Personal and professional growth was another reason I decided to nominate myself. Through the role, I gained leadership skills (and even learned my leadership style, which was impressive). I also got to enhance my collaboration skills and realized that a single Director does not hold a lot of power, but the Board as a whole does. These are skills that will help me no matter what my career path is. Also, not to mention how good this would look on my resume.
