Throughout my life, whether it was in elementary school, high school or post institution, I’ve always had the desire to be involved. So when I was told I should run for a board of directors role, I didn’t hesitate, because extra curricular activities have always been a part of my life.
I was motivated to run because a former board director encouraged me. She really helped me out and told me and others in my program that there was not enough students , and that this role would give us a rich amount of experience that we could look back on in the years to come.As I went through the elections process, I started to realize there where a lot of aspects I loved. I enjoy letting other people know what I’m up to, and also really enjoyed using social media to campaign. The Sheridan Student Union (SSU) had virtual templates where I could upload my photo and it then shared that I was running across different platforms, so campaigning online was not very difficult for me. I truly loved attending SSU events, because I got to meet many students across campus who were in different programs than me.
If you are thinking about running, but are hesitant, talk to your friends, or contact me if you’d like. I and the SSU will be here for you if you have any questions about becoming a Director on the Board. Once you’re nominated (which is pretty easy), be prepared to let people know that you’re running. When I ran, I asked my professors if I could briefly let students know that I was running, and I asked those students to let other people know that I was running too. Ask questions, because it will help you understand as you run for this role. Be prepared to attend SSU events so that you can meet students outside of your program. Students will want to vote for a familiar face, so make sure you can attend as many events as you can.
You’ll get a lot from being a Board Director. You’ll gain leadership experience which will look great on a resume. But personally, I think the greatest thing you’ll get out of this experience is working with other students who want to help improve student life on campus. It’s always nice being of service to others, but what makes something amazing, is working in service with others who have a similar vision and concern for students as you do.
