“This process of self-exploration and understanding has not only made me a better professional but also deeply enriched my personal life.”
- Ashley Mony
Q: What's a project or assignment you're really proud of working on? What made it so rewarding?
A: One assignment I’m really proud of was creating a lifebook, which was a handmade scrapbook documenting different years of my life – elementary school, middle school, high school, college, and the years since. It was a deeply reflective process, taking me down memory lane, which was challenging at times since some people are no longer in my life. However, it was also a gratitude-awakening experience.
Q: What's something you learned about yourself in this program?
A: Since starting this program, I’ve learned how different experiences can shape who we are as individuals. Understanding this in myself has given me a deeper sense of who I am. I’ve also realized the importance of having patience when working with children, which is something I’m actively working on (lol).
“The placements themselves are really exciting. As a student, you get the chance to go out into the field, absorb as much as you can, and make mistakes without the added pressure, which makes it a great learning experience. “
Q: Tell us about your experience in your program or college in general? What surprised you the most?
A: Studying Child and Youth Care at Sheridan has been enlightening. The most surprising part? How much I've grown personally while learning deeply about child development. The hands-on practicum was challenging initially, demanding quick application of theories, but it has profoundly improved my skills and confidence.
Q: What inspired you to study Child and Youth Care?
A: I’ve always had a strong desire to help others, and through conversations with people, I realized that many of the challenges they face are rooted in their childhood experiences. This insight motivated me to pursue a career where I could provide support and resources to individuals during those formative years, which ultimately led me to choose Child and Youth Care.
Q: What's the most exciting part of your program so far?
A: There have been so many exciting moments in this program. One of the highlights is during our circle times, where we get to share and vent about our practicum placements—it feels like a debrief with friends. Besides that, the placements themselves are really exciting. As a student, you get the chance to go out into the field, absorb as much as you can, and make mistakes without the added pressure, which makes it a great learning experience.
Q: What’s something you wish you knew before going into this program?
A: I wish I had known just how much it would influence me as a person. The depth of personal growth has been immense, I could reflect on many past experiences through a new lens. This process of self-exploration and understanding has not only made me a better professional but also deeply enriched my personal life.
“One of the most exciting things I've done at the SSU so far is making friends and networking.“
Q: How would you describe a typical day working at the SSU?
A: A typical day at the SSU is pretty fun! I start by checking updates, emails, and calendars—just the usual important stuff. Then, I make sure everything’s neat and tidy, including checking the hygiene carts and food cabinets to make sure they’re stocked. I also head to the kitchen to do a quick check there as part of the facility check. I try to squeeze in a little time to collect mail and packages, making sure they get to the right offices. I also print and laminate things for students and staff. Oh, and I can’t forget organizing the "Dressed for Success" cabinet, keeping it stocked and looking sharp! A newer addition to my routine is doing an inventory check at the end of the shift.
“In this role, I’ve also learned that Sheridan students are incredibly diverse and driven, which has been really inspiring.”
Q: What skill(s) did you gain from your program that helped you succeed in your position at the SSU or vice-versa?
A: From my program at Sheridan, I gained invaluable skills in active listening, empathy, and effective communication. These skills have been crucial in succeeding at SSU as a CSR, allowing me to connect with and support students more effectively, understanding their needs and helping to resolve their concerns with sensitivity and care.
Q: What's one of the most exciting things you've done in your role so far? What made it so fulfilling?
A: One of the most exciting things I've done at the SSU so far is making friends and networking. Meeting so many staff members from different departments and connecting with other CSRs has been really fun. It’s fulfilling because it’s not just about building professional relationships, but also getting to know people from different walks of life.
Q: What did you learn from working at the SSU that would help you in the future?
A: In this role, I’ve learned a lot about myself and Sheridan students. I’ve discovered that I thrive in environments where I’m multitasking and staying organized. It’s helped me realize that I’m good at balancing different responsibilities and keeping things running smoothly. I’ve also learned that Sheridan students are incredibly diverse and driven, which has been really inspiring.
Q: What are some of your goals for your role this year? How do you plan on achieving them?
A: Since this is my last semester in this role, my main goal is learning and growing while continuing to provide support. I also want to focus on educating myself more about the various services we offer, so I can be even more helpful. On a personal level, I aim to improve my ability to handle challenging inquiries with more confidence and patience. To achieve this, I plan on seeking out advice from colleagues and managers, finding ways to stay calm and solution-focused in tough situations.
