We invite you to join us in unity for Sheridan’s Observance of The National Day of Remembrance of the Québec City Mosque Attack and Action Against Islamophobia.
Join us as we remember the six people who were killed in 2017 in this act of terror, along with the 19 victims who were seriously injured. This observance is an opportunity to remember, to express solidarity with the survivors, and to understand and act against Islamophobia.
Hear from Muslim Students’ Association President Niloufar Sadeghi, Dr. Janet Morrison, Dr. Jane Ngobia, and special guest speaker Dr. Sabreena Ghaffar-Siddiqui, award-winning public speaker, researcher, human rights advocate, and professor of sociology and criminology at Sheridan, who will be discussing the invisible impact of everyday Islamophobia and its threat to all of us.
This event will end in a prayer by Shaykh Zahir Bacchus, Secretary of the Canadian Council of Imams, founder/director of the Lote Tree Foundation, teacher, and Imam of Masjid, Jamiat UI Ansar of Brampton.
On January 29th, Sheridan College will lower the flags on the Trafalgar and Davis campuses in commemoration.
Meet Dr. Sabreena Ghaffar-Siddiqui
Dr. Sabreena Ghaffar-Siddiqui is an award-winning public speaker, media pundit, researcher, and human rights advocate. She is currently a professor of sociology and criminology at Sheridan College and a diversity equity inclusion/policy consultant. Focusing in the areas of migration, race/ethnicity and ethno-religio diasporic identity, Dr. Ghaffar-Siddiqui’s research has explored the ways in which Muslim communities in the West navigate their social worlds in a post 9/11 climate, amidst rising Islamophobia.
Dr. Ghaffar-Siddiqui’s expertise are sought in academic, public, and political forums worldwide and she is regularly interviewed by major media outlets, including the New York Times, CBC News, CTV News and others. Her contributions as an academic continue to make an impact on the policies relating to the equity of immigrants and racialized minorities in Canada.
She has served on the boards of The Pluralist Foundation and The Canadian Council of Muslim Women Toronto, is on the editorial boards of Monitor Magazine and Institute of Religious and Socio-Political Studies, on the steering committee for Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives, and the Canadian Muslim Vote, and is the co-founder of Sisterhood of Salaam Shalom Canada. Dr Ghaffar-Siddiqui also volunteers her time as a Prince Charles’ Trust mentor for youth in the U.K.
