Gyimah Gariba is a social change catalyst, and a proud Ghanaian-Torontonian who graduated from Sheridan’s Animation program in 2013. When he’s not designing covers for Marvel Comics, creating and executive producing new animated series (Big Blue for Guru Studio), or landing on Forbes’ “15 Young African Creatives Rebranding Africa,” Gyimah works tirelessly to break down barriers for the next generation through his art.
Gyimah is redefining what the next generation of climate change activists look like through his new animation series, Big Blue. Today's climate change activists and environmentalists are predominantly white, even though BIPOC communities are disproportionately affected by climate change.
Gyimah is hoping to inspire kids, especially Black Canadian children, watching his work to not only see themselves represented on screen, but to also plant a seed in their mind that like the characters (the two main characters are Black siblings), they too can help take care of the planet.

Big Blue is an imaginative series that follows sibling underwater adventurers Lettie and Lemo (inspired by Gyimah's own siblings) who lead a quirky submarine crew with a magical ocean fairy stowaway named Bacon Berry. Together, they just might unravel the mysterious secrets of their underwater universe. The series drops young viewers deep into a wacky world of comic adventure, while helping to redefine what a family means and how caring for one another is the most important thing of all. Big Blue aims to help children and their families understand climate change, and teach them about the importance of taking care of our planet and each other. As more Canadians increasingly join the fight against climate change — and with COP26 drawing worldwide attention to the climate crisis — this series is not only contributing to this movement but also inspiring a new generation of climate change activists.
