Ontario Student Fee Changes

January 30, 2019 UPDATE: SSU SIGNS NATIONAL LETTER SPEAKING OUT AGAINST CHANGES THREATENING OSAP AND STUDENT UNION FUNDING.

75+ student associations representing over 1 million students signed a joint letter on January 29, 2019 to voice our opposition to the recent government announcement made Jan 17!

For more information about the Ontario Government announcement and the Student Choice initiative, read below.

On January 17th , the Ontario Government made sweeping and potentially disruptive announcements surrounding tuition cuts, OSAP restrictions and a “Student Choice Initiative” that could significantly affect student fees relied upon by student unions across Ontario, including Sheridan Student Union.

As a result, this would affect student activities on our campus, and resources provided to our students. This includes important activities and services like:

  • Over 250 on-campus  jobs we provide to students.

  • Student advocacy efforts on the behalf of students and to ensure you are getting the most out of your education and college experience.

  • Coordination of student health, dental and wellness service coverage.

  • Academic appeal assistance provided by student leaders.

  • Food bank service, financial aids, and bursaries for students.

  •  On-campus pubs, food services and event spaces.

  •  Over 100 student run clubs and associations at Sheridan.

  • On campus events and engagements.

Currently, the government has not circulated any technical information related to their plans. Sheridan Student Union is monitoring this situation closely.

We are connecting with our MPP's, government contacts and senior college leaders to assess the implications of this announcement moving forward, and will inform our student membership as soon as further information is received.
