As we enter the new school year, we are thrilled to share the highlights from our recent SSU 101 event, where part-time student staff got their first taste of the vibrant campus life ahead. From kicking the month off with a headband-making workshop, showcasing our team at orientation and creating new menus catered by Food Services, it’s been an exciting last month of summer!

Here’s a closer look at what your Sheridan Student Union has been up to this month.

Updates From Our President & Executive Team

This month, our President and Executive Team dedicated their efforts towards advocating for students in several ways:

  • We invited Elder Wendy Phillips from the Anishinaabe Cultural Tourism kicked off our SSU 101 event and shared powerful wisdom to guide us into the new year. As part of our ongoing commitment to Indigenous reconciliation, her words and presence helped spark meaningful discussions among our staff about Indigenous culture and heritage.

  • Ganyo Soh attended Unite, Inspire, Lead: The 2024 Student Union Development Summit (SUDS) held in Vancouver! This conference provided professional development for student leaders across Canada to network and build meaningful connections to support their student community.

  • During Sheridan’s Orientation Week our VP’s asked students to respond to a survey regarding how we can better contribute to their #SheridanLife. With over 600 responses, this survey allows our team to build relationships and empower our student body early in the school year! Throughout the upcoming months our VP’s will take this information to better support you. Thank you to all the students who participated!

All of our executive team members attended the SSU 101 event, along with greeting new students at Orientation Week. We also hired and welcomed our new executive staff members to our team:

  • Grace, Vice President of Academic Integrity & Student Success

  • Fahad, Vice President of International Affairs

  • Amalia, Vice President of Advocacy & Community Development

  • Vincent, Vice President of Equity, Diversity & Inclusion

We thank our former executive team for their support over the past year and wish them success as they move forward in their journey!

Coming Soon to Trafalgar: New Student Space!

As her term closed, our former Vice President of Engagement, Ritz Cruz, wanted to let you know about why the Marquee is closed for construction and showcases a new space coming soon to the Trafalgar campus!

Our President and Executive Team also attended Sheridan College's Spirit Day Ceremony. Ganyo Soh addressed the financial challenges students face and highlighted the resources available, including the Sheridan Student Emergency Fund to support their success despite these difficulties.

“I stand on stage in solidarity with my executive team who are domestic and international students from diversified backgrounds. We know firsthand the impact that financial struggles can have on students ,which in turn will impact their Sheridanlife. I am so happy to share that since 2019, 658 donors have contributed to the student emergency fund, raising a total of $166,206!” - Ganyo Soh

Our CSR team was actively engaged during Orientation Week and SSU 101, where they provided students and team members with valuable information about the SSU's services and perks. They made the experience enjoyable and educational by using a fun survey to highlight our offerings!

As we say a heartfelt farewell to our departing CSRs—Matthew "Jake" Martin, Diya "Cinnamon Roll with a Kick" Sharma, and Ashley "Queen of Snacks" Tran—we also extend a warm welcome to our new team members: Arshia, Sunday, and Elina. We're excited to have you join us!

Sheridan Student Union Clubs

To celebrate the back-to-school season, our Club Coordinators engaged in orientation activities across all three campuses and played a key role in launching Bruno’s Lounge! This was a vibrant hub where over fifteen clubs had the opportunity to showcase themselves to new students at each campus location. As the Clubs Conference approaches, our teams are finalizing preparations to ensure a successful event!
