I was just another international student coming to Canada from Punjab with huge dreams and little experience. It hasn’t been all fun and games coming from my hometown, where I completed high school. I had never been to a boarding school my school was one intersection away from my house since I was age four up until high school. It wasn’t easy an easy journey leaving my parents, home, and my childhood friends and stepping into a world I knew nothing about. But you know what they say,
“Difficult roads lead to beautiful destinations.”
Indeed, it became true.
My first semester as an international student was quite messy however, I made friends and connections in college and at the place I was staying. Eventually, I found a job at a fast-food chain. It wasn’t much and just paid basic, however, it gave me the skills, confidence, and connections for my self-growth. I eventually realized what kind of job I wanted to do, the kind of lifestyle that I crave, and the kind of personal perspective I want to have towards life. I got to know about the services Sheridan provides and I started following various Sheridan pages on social media platforms from there I got to know the job posting which led me to become a CSR and Campus Ambassador. I have been in touch with Sheridan faculty and students since.
It gives me great pleasure to be a part of the student body at Sheridan and become one of the faces of SSU. It feels like dream come true to be working for my college while studying here. Each day at Sheridan is a new experience for me. I have met many students from different departments that I could have never met if I weren’t a part of SSU. Moreover, I started to look for more opportunities like being part of Spring/Summer Orientation, signing up for being a marshal at Convocation Celebrations. I am proud to be part of Sheridan, as a student and as an employee.
In a time of incredible change, we all experienced a monumental shift together. Following a global pandemic, the transition from online schooling into our new college life, members of the Sheridan community have become chameleons to welcoming change into their daily routines.
But not every situation starts and ends so easily. There are hardships, challenges and struggles that we experience to come out successfully on the other side. In this blog series, students, Sheridan Alumni, and members of our Sheridan community will share their stories of resilience and how they were able to overcome these obstacles.
