How to Spend February 14th Your Way

February the 14th can either make you feel excited, or maybe a little meh – it's all about what you make of this day! I used to love Valentine Day’s as a kid! Getting cards and candy from my friends in class and handing them out during school. Now, I feel that this celebration of love has become just another commercialized event, pushing you to spend money on things you don’t really need, like overpriced flowers and candy.

While I understand that this day is meant to celebrate love and romance, I can't help but wonder why we need a specific occasion for it. Shouldn't love be something we celebrate all the time? I have been in a relationship for nearly six years and certainly feel the pressures that come along with this time of year. Are you in a long-term relationship, struggling to find the love of their life on Tinder or just aren’t feeling getting struck by cupid?

Here are some other fun ways to celebrate Valentine’s Day:

  1. Host a “Galentine’s” Night

What’s better than a night out with your favourite people? Instead of getting caught up on that one person, shift your focus and spend the night surrounded by friends, creating new memories and having fun. Put together a charcuterie board, pull out the board games, grab some cute decorations and maybe even pick out a theme! A night out with your besties might just be what the doctor ordered.

2. Go On a Solo Date

Treat yourself and be comfortable in your own presence! One of the best things about going on a solo date is that you can do whatever YOU want, and do not need to compromise. Whether this be going to your favourite coffee shop, staying in and binge-watching that TV show you’ve had your eye on or joining an evening full of secrets and suspense at our Murder Mystery Valentine’s Day Dinner! Instead of focusing on romantic love this year, focus on self-love and do something that makes you truly happy.

3. Take a Creative Workshop

Looking for the perfect excuse to unleash your creativity and pick up some new skills? Whether you're eager to dive into a fun and relaxing painting workshop, discover the art of pottery, or master a delicious a new recipe in a cooking class, there’s a world of hands-on activities waiting for you. Discover workshops that are happening right in your neighbourhood! Explore, experiment, and walk away with fresh skills - and maybe even a new hobby!

While there is nothing wrong with celebrating Valentine’s Day through flowers or chocolate, don’t feel confined by these usual expectations. There are countless ways to make this day meaningful, whether you're celebrating with someone special, hanging out with friends, or embracing some solo time. Make this celebration of love yours and define it in your own way. 💟
