Keep the Promise
By: Bradley Braganza - HMC Clubs Coordinator
As someone that has often shied away from getting involved in the past, I feel the need to reach out to my fellow students and share just why doing the opposite has given me a much more fulfilling college experience.
Perhaps it was laziness, or perhaps it was, in fact, shyness. But after switching programs a few years ago, I promised myself that whatever I did next, things were going to be different. While some things in my life have stayed the same, many things have changed for the better, and I am truly thankful that I kept my promise to myself all those years ago and got involved. This time around, I was able to get better grades, find myself a job, get involved in school, and meet some unforgettable characters along the way!
How did I do it? I got myself into a better mental and physical place, gained a little bit more confidence, and formed a manageable routine that worked for me and my studies. Upon reflection though, maybe I did overdue it a little with full-time school, 2 part-time jobs, and recreational sports on the side. But I guess that’s one of the fun things about the college experience, trial and error.
Perhaps you’re too lazy, or perhaps it’s shyness, but I can guarantee you that no harm or embarrassment can come from getting involved. I don’t consider myself to be an overachiever, nor do I expect any of you to be, but what I do highly encourage you to try during your time here, is something new; something out of your element.
I want to thank the SSU staff for their continued effort to provide students like myself with the amazing programming events and services that were so meaningful to me. Whether it was attending my first Raptors game, clubs meeting, music concert, boat party, or playing in a room full of adorable puppies that I was allergic to, all these moments gave me memories that I will never, ever forget!
And for any student that still fearful or embarrassed to get involved, or not sure where to begin, start here. This is exactly where it started for me. Give it a try and you never know where you will end up. I promise you won’t regret it!
