HIRE UP

The SSU has partnered with HireUp as part of Chartwells’ Thinking Ahead, Giving Back initiative, to help create 10,000 student development opportunities.

What is HireUp?

Hire Up expedites job seeking by bringing the interview process online with video.

If you’re a job seeker, you can create a profile, introduce yourself and answer standard interview questions using video. This allows verified employers to “meet” you 24/7. If you are currently employed or in classes, this is a great way to showcase your skills, without missing work or school. Once your profile has been created, you can add the link to your resume and share your story with potential employers.

For Job Seekers

Wait, what do you mean a video?

An introduction video is a one-minute clip that will appear in an employer’s search results. This gives you the opportunity to introduce yourself, and share the most pertinent information with the employer. Think of this as the equivalent of your cover letter or whatever is at the top of your resume, be it a “Summary” or “Professional Highlights” section. Alternatively, you can think of this as the “Tell me about yourself” question.  Check out this video on how it works ➡️

How Does It Work?

hire up will match employers to job seekers using a blind-matching algorithm. Matches are based on the following:

  • Desired salary: This is to ensure that job seekers are seeing jobs that are within their desired salary range, and employers are being shown candidates that are within their hiring budget.

  • Personal values: To promote great culture fit, we take note of the fundamental values of both the job seeker and the employer, in hopes of creating like-minded matches.

  • Attributes: We want to make sure that it's a good fit for both sides. When employers create job postings, they indicate which attributes their ideal job seeker should have. On the job seeker side, they self-report which five attributes best describe them. We use this information to create better matches for everyone.

  • Distance: Employers are displayed job seekers that are within the area, based on the address provided upon registration. We do not share job seeker addresses.

  • Department and job title: There are so many job titles! We’ve created these filters to help narrow the search. Employers can only select one department and one job title per job post. Job seekers can add multiple job titles within a specific department.

How do I create a video?

Easy! All you need is a camera. You can record a video directly through our platform, or you can upload a video from your computer or your phone. Here are few tips to get you started:

  • Have an idea of what you’re going to say, before recording. You’ll want to include the following: your first name, what you’re looking for in your next role, describe your experience/education, what you’re most proud of, and how you can add value to their company. These are guidelines but feel free to say whatever you’d like!

  • Once you have an idea of what you’d like to say, it’s time to set the stage. Make sure you’re in a quiet place and be conscious of what’s in the background of your video. You’ll also want to make sure that the area is well lit, so your video doesn’t come out too dark.

  • Dress appropriately! Make sure you’re wearing what you’d normally wear to an interview. Avoid shirts with patterns, as they tend to be blurry on camera. If you have facial hair, make sure it’s under control. If you wear makeup, be sure to powder your nose!

Ready to record? Sign in to your account, and go to your profile. Click on manage videos. From here, you’ll be able to record or upload a video. Take a deep breath and make your first recording!
