October 2024: Sheridan Student Union Recap
As we close out another month, we’re excited to share the initiatives and events that our teams have led this month. From celebrating our first Cycle Celebration Week to marching for the voices of sexual abuse survivors through Take Back the Night, the Sheridan Student Union has been actively promoting student health and wellness while creating opportunities for fun beyond the classroom.
Curious about what the SSU got up to this month? Here’s a closer look. ⬇️
Updates from Our Board of Directors
Our SSU has joined Ontario Student Voice (OSV), a provincial advocacy organization dedicated to representing college and polytechnic students across Ontario to create meaningful change for the next generation of students.
The Board has approved the financial commitment associated with being a member of OSV, recognizing that students directly benefit from advocacy efforts not only on campus, but also at the provincial level. Our Board of Directors will be working with the Institutional Research department to share opportunities for students to provide their feedback related to transportation needs for the student body.
The Hiring Committee also completed interviews for the two vacant director positions at the Trafalgar campus during reading week. We will be announcing our new directors next month. Stay tuned!
Updates From Our Executive Team
The Executive Team kicked off their term by advocating for key issues affecting the student body, including encouraging student involvement in campus clubs, and raising awareness about critical health topics such as menstrual health during Cycle Celebration Week.
The Executive Team joined forces for their first Executive event of the term. The Hall of Horrors pop-up event, combined the countdown to the International Day of Action for Academic Integrity (ICAI) with Halloween festivities! Over 150 students engaged in interactive games designed to teach participants about academic integrity and advocacy.
Additionally, the team hosted a virtual session to further promote ICAI, where Christine Moffatt, Academic Initiatives Librarian with Sheridan’s Library & Learning Services, was the keynote speaker.
We thank those who collaborated with the SSU for both virtual and pop-up events: AI Ambassadors, Alizeh Khan, Gulsher Singh Cheema, Lim Yee Wong, Gurleen Kaur and Nileshji Ajmalji Thakor, and Dr. Alex Hirniak, Academic Integrity Facilitator.
Congratulations to Grace, our VP of Academic Integrity and Student Success, for graduating from the Business Analysis and Process Management program at Sheridan College and representing the Pilon School of Business as valedictorian for the fall convocation ceremony.
Sheridan Student Union Services
This month, the services team kicked off our very first Cycle Celebration Week! From October 28 – November 1, we celebrated menstrual health for all while raising awareness about period poverty and working to break the stigma surrounding menstrual cycles. This week included a pad sewing workshop, a period purse information session and hormonal cycle training.
The services team is excited to announce our latest perk partners, helping you save on period care and learn more about hormone health without banking the bank!

October was a fun month for our students, while still embracing the spirit of inclusivity and safety that defines the SSU.
The events team kicked the month off with a packed Garba celebration for the Navaratri festival at our HMC campus! 450 students attended this celebration and danced the night away!
As the leaves change colours and air gets crispier, we welcomed fall by celebrating spooky season three times!
240 students joined our annual Halloween Haunt trip for a frightening night surrounded by monsters!
The events team hosted a ‘Family Halloween Party,’ where parents and kids alike enjoyed caricatures, face painting, pumpkin decorating, and a magic show!
The month wrapped up with an exciting Halloween Costume Party at the HMC campus! The event featured a lively costume contest and an abundance of chocolate and candy that guaranteed a serious sugar rush!
To embody our commitment to empowering our student community, the events team participated in “Take Back the Night,” collaborating with Sheridan College’s Student Affairs, the Centre for Equity and Inclusion, and the Social Work program. This event included speeches, a rally and march to honour individuals affected by gender-based and sexual violence.
“Take Back the Night” is the oldest worldwide movement to stand against sexual violence and commemorates individuals affected by gender-based and sexual violence.
Sheridan Student Union Clubs
This month, our clubs team hosted their Fall Clubs Fair at all three campuses! This event brought in 56 clubs who were able to meet and engage with students, showcasing further the diverse range of clubs available at all campuses.
The team also hosted their second annual SSU Clubs Conference, where 43 clubs and 73 club executives attended and learned more about how to take their club to the next level!
Throughout October, our clubs hosted 42 events and we warmly welcomed five new clubs to our community:
