What's New @ the SSU: June 2022
We Travelled Across Canada to Show Our Sheridan Pride
June 2022 Recap
This past month, we celebrated Sheridan Pride in person for the first time since the pandemic. We hosted a ton of fun events, travelled throughout Canada to get inspired and kicked off the Spring/Summer term on a high note. Curious what each department was up to throughout June? Let’s take a look!
COCA Student Life Summit
Recently we welcomed three new Student Life Coordinators (SLC’s), Gybell, Muskaan and Livia. Our SLC’s joined a group of other SSU student leaders for a trip to Ottawa to attend the COCA (Canadian Organization of Campus Activities) Student Life Summit.
This summit was filled with workshops, seminars and fun ways to help spark some inspiration for this year’s SSU engagements and events.
“COCA was an amazing experience! I learned a lot about events programming and I met a lot of amazing people. It was a really good way to have fun and learn. It helped me to get a lot of new ideas for SSU events and I can’t wait to work on them.” - Gybell, HMC Student Life Coordinator
”Some of my highlight moments at COCA were the late nights we would spend watching acts and listening to various artists. We were given lots of souvenirs, prizes, and good food, but I wouldn't be able to imagine being there without my amazing friends in the SSU. Everyone would make sure no one was missing out, making it a great opportunity to bond with each other. Of course, I couldn't forget the hype we experienced when Danny won Staff of the Year!”- Livia, TRC Student Life Coordinator
Your Marketing Street Team Supervisor, Lexx (who you may remember as a Student Life Coordinator last year) also attended the event and shared: “From my point of view, I would say getting to experience some amazing new artists and bands, having the opportunity to network with other individuals within my field, and learning new skills and tricks to better my work and experiences were a few highlights from COCA!”
“I learned more about how to cultivate a community within the college. As well as the sightseeing, it was so beautiful and a great opportunity to get a better understanding of our Canadian roots! 😊 ” - Lexx, Marketing Street Team Supervisor
COCA is just one of the many ways we at the SSU look to provide students with career development, training and connections! If you’re looking for a part-time job or curious about other work perks we offer, we’ve got some exciting news.

What has the exec team been up to?
Your SSU President, Kyle Budge, and the executive team welcomed the new Board of Directors at the HMC Student Centre for their first in-person meeting since being elected in our virtual elections back in April. The Board will have bi-weekly meetings throughout the year and will continue to advocate for student well-being, positive student experiences, and access to quality education.
Don’t forget that all Sheridan students are welcome to sign up, stop by and attend SSU Board Meetings (in person or virtually) to share their concerns or feedback with the Sheridan Student Union directly.
Kyle and Saz, your Executive Coordinator, also went to AMICCUS in Nova Scotia to meet with students union from across Canada and learn how to better support student needs. This year was hosted at St. Francis Xavier University, and the conference provided another chance to expand our advocacy efforts across all three campuses.
“ It was great to see how open to discussion professional staff of post-secondary student unions/associations are about a variety of topics, all in hopes to further improve students’ university/college experience!” - Saz, your Executive Coordinator
Rhema, your new VP of Staff and College Engagement, attended the virtual CACUSS conference 2022 called Critical Reflection in Shifting Times. The conference was a three-day virtual event filled with networking opportunities, virtual escape rooms, keynote speakers, and prize giveaways. During the conference, Rhema learned how to best support students as we start to navigate what our return to campus may look like: whether it’s a hybrid or in-person setting.
“The CACUSS conference was a blast, and I connected with individuals from different professional backgrounds across Canada who are dedicated to supporting their students. One session that stood out to me was how to amplify student voices through a podcast. The session discussed how a podcast could help survivors of sexual violence by giving them a voice. They also discussed their challenges while creating this initiative and some helpful tips.” - Rhema Javed, VP of Staff and College Engagement
Back in Ontario, your Student Leaders have been showing their Sheridan Pride from Mississauga all the way to downtown Toronto. Now, you may have already heard about your VP of Community Development, Julia, representing the SSU during a recent City of Mississauga meeting, but in case you missed it, Julia advocated for building positive spaces for 2SLGBTQIA+ folks from Sheridan and beyond. But that’s not all Julia was a part of this month. From celebrating the Pride Club Party to attending the Pride Parade, there was collective support for a variety of Sheridan Pride celebrations this month!
Julia and Tristan, your VP of Academics and Equity, also supported our Clubs Coordinators and SLCs host the Tie-Dye Pride event at HMC! With over 100 students joining in, we cannot wait to host more events in the new space.
Pride Tie-Dye Party @ HMC!
The Clubs Department proudly announced that one of its prospective clubs, 2SLGBTQIA+ Club, would be hosting a colourful celebration with FREE SSU Swag, pizza and more in honour of Pride Month, with the hopes of bringing the Pride Club to Sheridan! Not only was the event a massive success, but it turns out…the Pride club is almost an official club at Sheridan. Interested in getting involved? Reach out to your Clubs Coordinator, Sarah, on Clubs Corner.
The Clubs Coordinators also proudly announced three new student-led clubs at Sheridan: the Vietnamese Students’ Association, Basketball Social Club, and Ukrainian Students’ Association!

SSU Offices Are Open!
We’re also happy to introduce full-time in-person Customer Service Representative office hours! Campus Ambassadors are also walking across campus throughout the day to help you discover more about SSU services.
Our offices at all three campuses are open Monday - Friday to help you navigate your SheridanLife. If you’re looking for help, be sure to stop by our office, email or live chat with us remotely. Here’s how to get in touch with the team 🙂
