10 Holiday Shopping Tips for Students on a Budget

How to find the perfect holiday gifts & save money

By: Maja Sosa

Happy holidays from the SSU!

Hey Sheridan! We’re in the holiday season, and if you’re like me and enjoy giving gifts at this time of the year—but you need to stick to a budget—you’re going to love these ten hacks to find holiday gifts!

1. Set a Budget

First, we need to set a budget, which means you should determine how much you can afford to spend on gifts. Having a specic budget will help you narrow down your options and avoid overspending.

2. Plan in Advance

Start shopping early to take advantage of sales, discounts, and promotions. Look out for special holiday sales like Black Friday, Cyber Monday, and Boxing Day.

3. Always Compare Prices

Double check online and in-store to find the best deals for the same product sold at different stores. Websites like Amazon, Walmart, Best Buy, and other Canadian retailers often offer competitive prices. If you need to save up for the holidays but find that you’re spending a lot on groceries, check out these 6 grocery shopping hacks to cut down on expenses!

4. Consider DIY Gifts—they’re a great option!

Handmade gifts are both thoughtful and cost-effective. Get creative with DIY crafts, baked goods, or personalized items for your family or friends.

5. Shop Local

Explore local markets, craft fairs, or artisan shops. You might nd unique, affordable gifts while supporting small businesses in your community. Get a gift and give to your community at the same time!

Ask about student discounts at the SSU office on your campus!

6. Use Cashback and Coupons

Take advantage of cashback offers, coupons, and discount codes available through various websites, apps, or credit card rewards. Did you know? Sheridan students can get discounts at a wide variety of places, including food, retailers, entertainment, and more!

7. Gift Experiences

Instead of physical items, consider gifting experiences that you can enjoy together in the future, such as movie tickets, spa vouchers, cooking classes, and outdoor activities. These can often be found at discounted rates. If your gift recipient loves an active pastime, why not try Ultimate Laser Tag at a discount? Or if they’re more interested in the arts, why not take them to the Royal Ontario Museum, or to see a play at the Tarragon Theatre? There truly is something for everyone!

8. Regift or Swap

If you have items in good condition that you either haven’t used or no longer need, consider regifting or participating in gift swaps with friends or family members.

9. Subscription Services and Boxes

Consider researching subscription boxes and services, as some offer trial periods or introductory discounts. Look for options that t within your budget and match the recipient's interests.

10. Utilize Social Media and Groups

Join online communities or social media groups that focus on deals, freebies, and discounts. People often share great nds that could be perfect for your budget. (I highly recommend Facebook Marketplace!).

Always remember, the thought and effort put into a gift often means more than the price tag. Personalized gifts, heartfelt letters, or spending quality time together can make for meaningful presents without breaking the bank.
